Turrón being cut beside almonds and copper pans, with Xixona and its castle behind

Xixona

A mountain town whose protected Jijona and Turrón de Alicante industries, seasonal ice-cream trade and hilltop castle explain far more than a Christmas sweet.

Almonds, honey and mountain roads

A working confectionery town below a restored castle

Xixona rises inland from Alicante among dry hills, almond country and roads towards the higher valleys. Its Valencian name is also a protected geographical indication, so the town and one of its defining products are unusually difficult to separate.

Factories and shops make turrón visible, but the local story also includes an ice-cream trade whose families travelled across Spain for the summer season. Above the streets, the castle and Torre Grossa provide an older line through the landscape.
